• G-10 or Micarta: Lightweight composites that offer excellent grip, strength, and weather resistance — great for both camping and tactical knives.

• Rubberized polymers (like Kraton or TPE): Provide a soft, slip-resistant feel that’s forgiving during extended use.

• Stabilized wood: Combines the warmth of natural wood with improved moisture resistance.

• Aluminum or Titanium: Durable and lightweight but may need added texture for grip.

Due to an emergency or a natural disaster, you may need to evacuate your home at a moment’s notice. When minutes count, you will need to have essential supplies prepared and ready to go in advance.

Most city dwellers would prefer to ride out whatever emergency comes their way and stay in the perceived safety of their homes.

 

All of your essentials must be carefully packed in go-bags (sling bags or 3-day packs). All family members will need their own bags to carry their necessities for the 3-day period.

Sling bags are helpful for carrying additional essentials (electronics, multi-tool, flashlight, extra batteries) and a 3-day pack to carry your clothing, food and first aid supplies.

Take your go-bags on a test run (a hike, walk or a short camping trip). Then evaluate how well your bags work or how well you have packed your items. It’s important to practice regularly, but the quality of your practice is more important.  Be sure to practice good solid fundamentals throughout your firing sequence:

What to Practice

There are many exercises you can perform; however, we suggest one particular dry fire exercise that will help build muscle memory for consistent marksmanship.

What Is Dry Fire?

Dry fire is using your firearm to simulate the firing sequence of your pistol without any live ammunition.  In fact, it allows you to concentrate on your marksmanship technique and refine your skills rather than focusing on the recoil and where you hit the target.

From a distance of 5 yards (15 feet), using dry fire, you will complete:

5 – dry fire repetitions in each of the 5 ovals

5 – minutes of practice a day

5 – times a week

Do this for 30 days and then take your target to the range for some live fire.  5 shots in each oval.

 You will be amazed at the results of your practice.

As a firearms trainer, I’m often asked, “What pistol do I purchase?” This is both a simple and complex question to answer. In this article, we’ll discuss what I have found to be the most important items to consider when purchasing your first pistol; fit for purpose and fit to your hands.

Purchasing Your First Pistol – Fit for Purpose

Purpose in our context means the reason you are purchasing the pistol. Thinking this through and knowing the purpose will help guide you to your final purchase decision.

Your Purpose Guides the Caliber

Because there are so many to choose from, I’m often asked, “Which pistol caliber should I buy?” If personal protection is your purpose, the most available, effective, and cost friendly caliber is 9mm. You can often find this on sale and readily stocked at your local firearm store. Numerous varieties are commonly available to suit your needs in personal protection, training, and target shooting.

Additionally, larger or more powerful pistol calibers may have greater knockdown power, but they may not be as readily available, affordable, or they may impact the fit of the pistol to your hands.

Your Purpose Guides the Functions and Features

If you will carry your pistol concealed on or off your body, this will have a direct impact on the functions and features you choose. Understanding the purpose of your pistol is key in pulling the trigger on your purchase.

A full size pistol can be concealed and carried in an off body bag, purse, or backpack

A more compact pistol is needed if you are going to carry your pistol concealed on your body.

The need to quickly draw your firearm may also outweigh the need for external lever safeties or an external hammer, opting for a simplified platform such as a striker fired pistol with a trigger safety.

Purchasing Your First Pistol – Fit to Your Hands

Of equal importance, is whether the pistol is well suited to your hands. This holds true whether your hands are small or large. The pistol you choose must fit your hands well.

Importantly, you want to make sure your strong hand is able to grip high up on the backstrap/tang

Further, the trigger should feel comfortable on your index finger; when you pull straight back it should not feel strained. Test out both the trigger break and the reset

Also, be sure the grip feels comfortable and nothing is digging into your palm or fingers. If the pistol you are considering has an adjustable backstrap, be sure to choose the right backstrap that fits your hand, one that also allows sufficient support from your support hand. 

In conclusion, the purchase of your first pistol is very important. If you follow the simple principles of fit for purpose, and fit to your hands, you will achieve the success you need to pursue your firearm training while avoiding unnecessary stress and frustration.

VISIT THE MCAS MIRAMAR AIRSHOW

TSI will show our support for our US Armed Forces, First Responders and the US Navy Blue Angels by attending the Marine Corp Air Station (MCAS) Miramar Airshow on Friday 9/22. Each year, MCAS Miramar opens their doors to the public, bringing together a number of aircraft, equipment, acrobatic flyers and personnel. So, this is their way to showcase their skills, show their appreciation to the local community and interact with the local public.

 

After the gates open at 8 A.M., the program will immediately commence with demonstrations of the vintage USAF U-2 Dragon Lady, USMC MV-22, F35B, C17, and the F-16 Viper with P-51 Heritage Flight. Likewise, be amazed at the maneuvers by the Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF), and other civilian performers. The day will end with a thrilling display from the world famous U.S. Navy Blue Angels’ flight demonstration squadron.

How Much is Admission?

General admission is FREE. Optionally, special seating for grandstands and VIP areas are offered at a reasonable price. However you plan your outing, come out and spend the day marveling at the acrobatic flyers, interact with the static display vehicles and equipment. Also, take time to talk with the servicemen and women and learn about the US Armed Forces. Not to mention, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up plenty of swag (stickers, patches, goody bags) and souvenirs to your hearts content!

Be Prepared!

Be sure to wear a wide brimmed hat, put on sunscreen and be prepared for some walking. Above all, enjoy the sunshine! There are restrictions to get on the military base, so be sure to look up their security protocols in advance to avoid any problems or delays.  Since the jet engines get very loud, it is a good idea to bring hearing protection (passive – ear plugs/muffs, active – Howard Leights, etc). The most important item to bring is a great attitude with the expectation of being amazed, overwhelmed, and entertained by all of the cool equipment, aircraft, and personnel. See you there!
