Physical Skills are Perishable

Similar to physical fitness, firearm motor skills are perishable. If you don’t maintain your skills through consistent use, they will fade over time. We need to continually practice and refresh our existing skill set.

Practice Makes Permanent

In a high-stress situation, you must rely on your training to make split-second decisions. Under stress, you will reduce to your lowest level of training, so it is important to build muscle memory. Author Malcom Gladwell states in his book “Outliers: The Story Of Success”, it takes 10,000 hours of intensive practice to achieve mastery of complex skills. Most of us don’t have 10,000 hours to practice, but repetition is needed to make those skills permanent.

How to Practice

It’s important to practice regularly, but the quality of your practice is more important. Be sure to practice good solid fundamentals throughout your firing sequence:

What to Practice

There are many exercises you can perform; however, we suggest one particular dry fire exercise that will help build muscle memory for consistent marksmanship.

What Is Dry Fire?

Dry fire is using your firearm to simulate the firing sequence of your pistol without any live ammunition. In fact, it allows you to concentrate on your marksmanship technique and refine your skills rather than focusing on the recoil and where you hit the target.

From a distance of 5 yards (15 feet), using dry fire, you will complete:

5 – dry fire repetitions in each of the 5 ovals

5 – minutes of practice a day

5 – times a week

Do this for 30 days and then take your target to the range for some live fire. 5 shots in each oval.

You will be amazed at the results of your practice.

Practicing with your firearm on a regular basis is absolutely essential to maintain those perishing physical skills. Using the 5x5x5 dry fire practice exercise will help you to achieve the level of success you are striving for.

As a firearms trainer, I’m often asked, “What pistol do I purchase?” This is both a simple and complex question to answer. In this article, we’ll discuss what I have found to be the most important items to consider when purchasing your first pistol; fit for purpose and fit to your hands.

Purchasing Your First Pistol – Fit for Purpose

Purpose in our context means the reason you are purchasing the pistol. Thinking this through and knowing the purpose will help guide you to your final purchase decision.

Your Purpose Guides the Caliber

Because there are so many to choose from, I’m often asked, “Which pistol caliber should I buy?” If personal protection is your purpose, the most available, effective, and cost friendly caliber is 9mm. You can often find this on sale and readily stocked at your local firearm store. Numerous varieties are commonly available to suit your needs in personal protection, training, and target shooting.

Additionally, larger or more powerful pistol calibers may have greater knockdown power, but they may not be as readily available, affordable, or they may impact the fit of the pistol to your hands.

Your Purpose Guides the Functions and Features

If you will carry your pistol concealed on or off your body, this will have a direct impact on the functions and features you choose. Understanding the purpose of your pistol is key in pulling the trigger on your purchase.

A full size pistol can be concealed and carried in an off body bag, purse, or backpack

A more compact pistol is needed if you are going to carry your pistol concealed on your body.

The need to quickly draw your firearm may also outweigh the need for external lever safeties or an external hammer, opting for a simplified platform such as a striker fired pistol with a trigger safety.

Purchasing Your First Pistol – Fit to Your Hands

Of equal importance, is whether the pistol is well suited to your hands. This holds true whether your hands are small or large. The pistol you choose must fit your hands well.

Importantly, you want to make sure your strong hand is able to grip high up on the backstrap/tang

Further, the trigger should feel comfortable on your index finger; when you pull straight back it should not feel strained. Test out both the trigger break and the reset

Also, be sure the grip feels comfortable and nothing is digging into your palm or fingers. If the pistol you are considering has an adjustable backstrap, be sure to choose the right backstrap that fits your hand, one that also allows sufficient support from your support hand.

In conclusion, the purchase of your first pistol is very important. If you follow the simple principles of fit for purpose, and fit to your hands, you will achieve the success you need to pursue your firearm training while avoiding unnecessary stress and frustration.

Rifle Scope Getting Started Guide

An excellent scope is a vital part of anyone's rifle.

Whether for target plinking or competition long range shooting, knowing your rifle scope is extremely important to your performance. Because there are so many different options for scopes, here’s how you can identify specific features of a scope, and ultimately decide on which optic will suit your needs. In this article, we’ll be going over 3 main features:

Units of adjustment
Parallax
Focal planes
And a brief discussion of eye relief.

First of all, it’s important to understand the units of measurement for scope adjustment.

There are two unique methods of measurement: MRAD (or MIL), and MOA. Both measurements both relate heavily to trigonometry, so if you’re familiar with trigonometry and basic algebra, you’re in for a treat.
All scopes are designed to have their click adjustments measured in either MRAD or MOA. Knowing how to use each will greatly assist you in your shooting experience.

MRAD or MIL: Both MRAD and MIL are short for milliradians (1 radian = 1000 milliradians). This means that one click on your scope will span an angle in milliradians (see illustration below).

Simply put, one click on a 1 MRAD scope will move the point of aim 3.6* inches at 100 yards.

*diagram says 3.7 inches; 3.6/3.7 inches are interchangeable

MOA: MOA is short for minutes of angle. Angles in imperial measurement are typically measured in degrees. Mathematically, angles are split into degrees, degree minutes, and degree seconds (DMS). MOA uses degree minutes; hence, “minutes of angle”.
As with time, 60 degree seconds is equal to 1 degree minute, and 60 degree minutes is equal to 1 degree. If it helps to think of these angles in terms of degrees, 1 MOA is equal to 1/60th of a degree, or ~0.06667 degrees.
This is how MOA adjustments look at 100 yards:

Simply put, one click on a 1 MOA scope will move the point of aim 1 inch at 100 yards.

Why is this important?

Knowing the unit of measurement on your scope will help you with zeroing and adjusting between shots. As long as you know what adjustment value your scope is (more on that later) and the distance to your target, you have a basic idea of how to adjust.

To put this in perspective, let’s set a scenario up with MOA, the arguably more common of the two units of measurement. If you’re 100 yards away from your target, and you have a 1 MOA scope, each click on your scope will move your reticle* about 1 inch in whatever direction you choose, as seen in the MOA diagram above. If your bullet hits about an inch above your reticle, you can move the reticle up by one click on your scope and your point of impact will now be dead on your reticle. Similarly, if your bullet hits an inch to the right of your reticle, you can move the reticle to the right by one click and your point of impact will now be dead on your reticle.

*A small note on zeroing your optics – scopes use one of two adjustment concepts; adjusting the reticle, and adjusting the bullet. For the “adjusting the reticle” concept, you adjust the scope as if you’re moving your reticle to the bullet’s point of impact. For the “adjusting the bullet” concept, you adjust the scope as if you’re moving the bullet’s point of impact to your reticle. Yes, you’re really just adjusting the reticle in both cases, but these concepts are just an illustration to help the user understand how their scope works. The “adjusting the bullet” concept tends to be more common.
When you first get a scope, fiddle around with it and see if the adjustments “adjust the reticle” or “adjust the bullet”. Keep this in mind when zeroing any scope, as each scope is different.

The second feature we will be examining is parallax.

Parallax is an effect that affects perspective when looking at objects from different distances. Parallax is what creates depth of field; that is, when you focus on one object with your eyes, the surroundings are blurry. This is utilized to great artistic effect in photography and film.

Here are some examples.

The photo at right demonstrates short depth of field.

Notice how only the ladybug is in focus, while its surroundings are blurred.

The photo at right demonstrates long depth of field.

Notice how the entire picture is in focus with no background blur.

What does this mean for a rifle scope?

All instruments with lenses are subject to parallax, including the human eye.

A good parallax adjustment on a scope is similar to a long depth of field; that is, all objects in the scope, whether far or near, are in focus. Think of far objects as your target, and close objects as the reticle itself. In this way, a good parallax means both your target and reticle are crystal clear at the same time.
Although not entirely accurate, you can think of parallax adjustment as adjusting focus, since you are trying to find a balance in clarity between far objects and near objects.
Another way of adjusting parallax is with adjustable objective, or AO, scopes. Adjustable Objective simply means you adjust the focus based on your range. If your target is at 100 yards, you would adjust the objective to 100 yards, and your scope should have perfectly focused parallax for 100 yards.

To put it simply, a good parallax makes sure you can actually see your target clearly.

The third feature we will be examining is the focal plane.

Remember how we talked about how you could think of the target as a far object, and the reticle itself as a close object? Well, it turns out that there is a system loosely based on this example that describes what a scope does when you zoom in. This system is called focal planes.

The concept of a focal plane is demonstrated below:

The idea of a focal plane treats foreground and background as if they are two layers sitting on top of each other. Running with our previous analogy, whatever sits on the blue (first/front) plane is a “close” object, and whatever sits on the red (second/rear) plane is a “far object”.

What does this have to do with scopes?

There are two types of scope focal planes: FFP and SFP.

FFP (First Focal Plane): Also called Front Focal Plane (FFP), FFP refers to the blue plane in the diagram above. FFP simply means “When you zoom in, the reticle zooms in as well.” See below for a visual explanation.

SFP (Second Focal Plane): Also called Rear Focal Plane (RFP), SFP refers to the red plane in the diagram above. SFP simply means “When you zoom in, the reticle stays the same.” See below for a visual explanation.

Why is this helpful?

Believe it or not, zooming in on your scope can actually change where your rounds hit, potentially costing you a hit on your target:

With the example above, even though your scope may be zeroed when fully zoomed out, your point of impact may immediately change when you zoom in.

Let’s say you wanted to aim based on the dot markings on the reticle.

Imagine you’re zooomed all the way out. If you want to aim with the dot directly to the right of the crosshairs, you would hit pretty far from the “bullseye”. But if you were to use that same dot when zoomed all the way in, you would hit a near-bullseye.

Going back to FFP and SFP:

An FFP scope enlarges the reticle as you zoom in. This means that the distance in between dots is always the same; you won’t have to worry about it changing from zoom.

Notice how the reticle enlarges as you zoom in. When zoomed out, the whole target is only around 4 dots wide. When zoomed in, the target is around 8 dots wide*.

*Note: The illustration below is merely conceptual and does not accurately depict real-life proportions. If this was truly accurate, the target would still be 4 dots wide, even after zooming in.

On the other hand, an SFP scope keeps the reticle the same as you zoom in. Although this is simpler, it does mean you have to worry about whether or not your scope is still accurate when you change zoom.

Notice how the reticle stays the same as you zoom in. When zoomed out, the target is only around 4 dots wide. When zoomed in, the target jumps to 10+ dots wide.

The fourth and final feature we will be examining is eye relief.

Eye relief is the distance between your eye and the scope eyepiece. This distance is usually designed by manufacturers to be 3-4 inches.

The point of eye relief is to maximize the picture inside your scope, while still giving you good peripheral vision to stay situationally aware.

Having your scope too close or too far away from your eye fails to maximize the picture you see in your scope, which looks like the image at right.

A good eye relief maximizes the picture you see in your scope, as seen at right.

Eye relief is usually 3-4 inches to give you good peripheral vision while also preventing the scope from hitting your eye when you fire.

However, each scope is made differently; make sure to find a scope that has an eye relief that suits your needs, based on your mission.

In this article, we covered units of adjustment, parallax, focal planes, and eye relief.

Scope adjustments are measured in terms of MOA and MRAD. Just remember that 1 MOA means “One click will move 1 inch at 100 yards” and 1 MRAD means “One click will move 3.6 inches at 100 yards”.
Parallax is typically adjusted based on your range. Know what the minimum parallax of your scope is (meaning, “This is the minimum distance that both your target and reticle are clear at the same time”), and know what your range is to better adjust your scope.
FFP means “When you zoom in, the reticle zooms in as well”, and SFP means “When you zoom in, the reticle stays the same”. When picking out a scope, decide whether you want FFP or SFP, as each carries unique advantages and disadvantages.
Eye relief is the distance between your eye and your scope. You want this distance to be on par with the factory determined distance to ensure that you get maximum picture in your scope, while at the same time maintaining good situational awareness, and of course, not getting hit in the eye with your scope when you fire.

Each of these features may greatly assist your shooting experience if tuned correctly. Find what you like, work with it, and enjoy the process. With practice, you’ll be driving tacks in no time!

Getting Started With Airsoft Hop-Up

A hop-up system is one of an airsoft gun’s most important components. A good hop-up unit will ensure the maximum range possible for your setup.

This article aims to explain the basic function of hop-up, parts of a hop-up unit, and how to adjust a hop-up unit in order to maximize efficiency.

WHAT IS HOP-UP?

Hopup is an effect that utilizes the same mechanics as the physics phenomenon known as the Magnus Effect, in which a cylindrical object with backspin relies on air resistance to resist the effects of gravity.

In simple terms, backspin is applied to your BB to give it more range.

This effect is controlled by a hop-up unit, which uses a little arm to push down on a bucking (or packing), which then translates to backspin on the BB, as seen in the diagram below:

WHAT IS A HOP-UP BUCKING (PACKING)?

A hop-up bucking, or packing, is a small rubber slip that fits over your barrel. This component goes directly between the hop-up unit itself and the BB, as the hop-up effect is applied to your BB using direct contact with the bucking or packing.

Buckings are usually made of rubber with varying hardness. Although softer buckings allow a better air seal and finer adjustment, harder buckings used for higher velocity setups offer better durability over prolonged use. When buying a bucking, information is usually provided by the seller on the material hardness and recommended velocity (measured in feet per second) range.

WHAT TYPES OF HOP-UP UNITS ARE THERE?

Although the basic principle of all hop-up units is the same, there are numerous designs to achieve this magical backspin effect.

Dial Style: This style is commonly found in most stock M4 AEG’s (Figure 4). It relies on mini gears to move an arm downwards, which applies pressure to the top of the bucking. A variation of this style can be found in most Gas Blowback Pistols (see figure 5).

Rotary Style: This style can be found on higher end AEG’s and aftermarket upgrade hop-up units (Figure 6). Despite achieving the same effect as dial style, it is often more consistent, convenient, and allows for finer hop-up adjustment. A variation of this style can also be found in select Gas Blowback Pistols.

Slider Style: This style is most commonly found on AK AEG’s (Figure 7) and stock Sniper Rifles. Instead of a dial, it relies on a sliding mechanism to physically push down the hop-up arm, which applies pressure to the top of the bucking.

TDC Style: TDC, short for Top-Dead-Center (or Top-Down-Center for some), is most commonly found in aftermarket hop-up units, especially in Airsoft Sniper Rifles. This style allows direct downward pressure on the hop-up bucking, as some stock slider style hop-up units result in off-centered application of hop-up, resulting in side-hopping and BBs curving off to the side. The TDC style can also be found in some Non-Blowback Gas Pistols. Figure 8 below depicts an aftermarket TDC unit on a sniper rifle with a mod that allows for external, tool-less adjustment.

WHAT ARE NUBS?

A hop-up nub, also called a tensioner, is a small piece of rubber or plastic that sits in the hop-up arm. This small component determines the contact area that the bucking touches the BB with. Different nubs usually directly correspond with various types of hop-up systems.

WHAT HOP-UP STYLES ARE THERE?

There are numerous types of hop-up styles that can achieve different goals, depending on what kind of bucking and nub combination you use.

The most common type of hop-up system uses a small roll of rubber to apply pressure to the top of a bucking. Figure 9 shows a standard M4 AEG bucking and nub. Note the small, cylindrical nub as pictured below.

Flat Hop uses a rubber nub with a flat contact surface, standing in contrast to the standard round nub. This allows for more contact surface on the BB, which can translate to more consistent hop and better range. Flat Hop is usually considered the no-hassle younger brother of R-Hop. However, it is not without its own quirks and complications. Figure 10 depicts flat hop nubs designed by Maple Leaf.

R-Hop uses a small piece of rubber directly integrated into the barrel. This patch directly contacts the BB, rather than using the bucking to do so. This allows even more contact than flat hop, but requires certain amounts of expertise and fine-tuning to get it just right.

Styles of hop-up aren’t just limited to these three, however. There are many mix-and-match systems based on different nub and bucking combinations, such as S-Hop, H-Hop, and M-Hop, only to name a few. However, all achieve similar effects depending on what is needed of them.

HOW DO YOU USE/ADJUST HOP-UP?

Adjusting your hop-up unit will control the amount of backspin applied to your BB. Adjusting hop-up appropriately will unlock the full range potential of your airsoft gun. In order to do this, an appropriate trajectory must be achieved, as seen in the graphic below:

More hop means more backspin, while less hop means less backspin. More backspin means the BB will curve upwards more, while less backspin means the BB will curve upwards less.

Too much backspin results in “overhop”, while too little backspin results in “underhop”.

The best trajectory is achieved by slightly over-hopping the BB to your desired range, allowing it to flatten out and drop naturally (as seen in the graphic above). Although a perfectly flat trajectory may be desired, allowing a slight BB rise (slight overhop) will allow even more consistent range than a flat trajectory.

Most stock hop-up units are great out of the box, and usually do not need replacement or modification. However, although it may seem redundant at times, a combination of a good hop-up unit, bucking, nub, and BB will quite literally go a long way.

Tighten the tension adjust screw for a secure hold, and loosen it for a faster draw.

Tactical Belt Clip:

Open the Tactical Belt Clip: 1) lift up the flip lock 2) squeeze both locking clips with your thumb and index finger and open

The Tactical Belt Clip can be used with a belt up to 2.25”. Move the belt adjusters to the correct width of your belt.

Insert your belt into the Tactical Belt Clip. The flip lock will NOT close until the locking clips are fully engaged.

Insert your ammo magazine into the SpeedMag Pouch with the rounds facing forward toward the “V” notch.

Adjust the angle (cant):

Tension adjust screw:

Tighten the tension adjust screw for a secure hold, and loosen it for a faster draw.

Installing the MOLLE Lok:

Open the MOLLE Lok and feed it through two rows of MOLLE loops.

While pushing the Locking Clip down, swing the SpeedMag Pouch up and lock it into place.

Care and Maintenance of Your SpeedMag Pouch:

Keep away from high heat and the inside free from any dirt or debris since both will damage the holster and your weapon. Use soap and water to wash away debris, and avoid using any solvent-based cleaners. Regularly check the retention and mounting screws, and routinely wipe the inside of the pouch.

Magazine Pouch Insert Installation:

Make sure your magazine pouch is free from dirt or debris that could interfere with the insert.

Install the Magazine Pouch Insert into your magazine pouch square end down. Push down until it reaches the bottom of your magazine pouch.

The flared ends of the Magazine Pouch Insert should sit just below the pouch opening.

The flared shape of the Magazine Pouch Insert will lock your ammo magazine into place.

MOLLE Mount Pistol Holster

Congratulations on your purchase of a quality handcrafted product. Each holster has a number of adjustments and customizations you can make to suit your needs:

Two retention adjustment screws:

Tighten the trigger guard retention screw for a secure hold, and loosen it for a faster draw.

Adjust the barrel retention screw to tighten or loosen the fit in the holster.

MOLLE Locking Fork:

Adjust the angle of your holster with the 3 hex screws on the back of the holster (hex wrench included)

Slide the two longer outer prongs through your MOLLE webbing, keeping the two center prongs on top of the webbing until you reach the bottom row.

Lock the two longer outer prongs into the bottom MOLLE webbing and insert the two center prongs into the last row, locking the entire fork into place.

TSI Pistol Holster

Congratulations on your purchase of a quality handcrafted product. Each holster has a number of adjustments and customizations you can make to suit your needs:

Adjust the barrel retention screw to tighten or loosen the fit in the holster.

Standard Belt Loop:

Adjust the angle of your holster with the 3 hex screws on the back of the holster (hex wrench included)

Mid and Low Ride Mount

The Safariland Mid Ride (SL6070UBL-2-50) and Low Ride (6075UBL) Belt Loop can be used with a belt up to 2.25” wide. Slide your belt through the inside of the belt loops.

Low Ride + Strap Belt Loop

Loosen the 3 hex screws to adjust the location of the leg strap buckle. Adjust the length of the strap using the length adjust for the correct tightness around your thigh.

Drop Leg System (DLS)

Feed your belt through the detachable belt loop. Once on your belt, you can quickly detach and reattach your DLS without removing the belt loop.

Lengthen the detachable belt loop to drop the DLS up to 9 inches below your belt. Shorten the detachable belt loop to raise the DLS higher up on your leg.

Adjust the length of the strap using the length adjust for the correct tightness around your thigh.

Converting your Drop Leg System (DLS) into a High Mobility Low Ride:

Lift open the lower loop velcro and remove the entire belt loop buckle assembly

Feed your belt through the lower loop velcro and close it so it is secure.

Adjust the length of the strap using the length adjust for the correct tightness around your thigh.

Getting Started With Airsoft Hop-Up

A hop-up system is one of an airsoft gun’s most important components. A good hop-up unit will ensure the maximum range possible for your setup.

This article aims to explain the basic function of hop-up, parts of a hop-up unit, and how to adjust a hop-up unit in order to maximize efficiency.

WHAT IS HOP-UP?

Hopup is an effect that utilizes the same mechanics as the physics phenomenon known as the Magnus Effect, in which a cylindrical object with backspin relies on air resistance to resist the effects of gravity.

In simple terms, backspin is applied to your BB to give it more range.

This effect is controlled by a hop-up unit, which uses a little arm to push down on a bucking (or packing), which then translates to backspin on the BB, as seen in the diagram below:

WHAT IS A HOP-UP BUCKING (PACKING)?

A hop-up bucking, or packing, is a small rubber slip that fits over your barrel. This component goes directly between the hop-up unit itself and the BB, as the hop-up effect is applied to your BB using direct contact with the bucking or packing.
